Evighedsfjorden (Eternity Fjord), Greenland

August 5, 2025

Today we took a zodiak out to the Evigheds glacier and were able to land and walk up close to it.

Because we were with Image Masters, we explored around the fjord some before landing.

We enjoyed the stunning views of waterfalls, and occasional colorful patches of dwarf fireweed and algae.

We also enjoyed watching sea birds.

The kittiwakes had a breeding colony on the cliffs.

We then headed back to the glacier.

The blues in the glacier are where the ice is so old and dense that it absorbs all colors except blue. The black is where it has picked up rock materials as it pushes through the land.

This glacier is currently receding and occasionally roars as it calves off bits of ice.

Finally, it was time to land and walk up to the glacier.

We were greeted by Lupe, the cruise director, dressed as a polar bear.

To reach the glacier, people had to climb up large rocks.

In addition to the view of the glacier, there were still pools of wat

er.

One was bright red. This was likely caused by acid rock drainage as the glacier went through cycles of freezing and thawing accelerates the weathering process and the minerals in the rock release an acid that colors the water red in a process called "acid rock drainage".

Brent found bird feathers amidts the rocks.

The zodiac drivers were waiting for us when we returned.

On our way back, we me up with the kayakers.
