As a special surprise, our Image Masters group was able to take a zodiac ride ahead of the ship up to the tide water glacier in Prince Christian Sound. There was one other Zodiac out with us that was helping to guide the ship in.

We stirred up a group of kittiwake as we set out on our adventure.

Max shared an amazing photo he captured of a single kittiwake.

We marveled at the striking diversity of colors and patterns in the rocky landscape.

The glacier encircled a outcrop of bare rock. It was massive, but we could see places where it was receding. Earlier, the expedition team had showed us earlier pictures of the glacier where a much smaller amount of bare rock showed.

As we neared the glacier, we could see it reflected in the water.

Approaching even closer, we reached the bits of ice floating in the water from when the glacier calved.

The glacier towered over the zodiacs.

Basking on the larger chunks, were some bearded seals. They are the largest of the Arctic seals, reaching lengths of 8 feet. They can weigh up to 950 pounds! Although they were quiet on our visit, bearded seals have impressive vocal abilities. They emit trills that can be heard by other seals 12 miles away. The sound lasts for 3 minutes.

Before heading back to the ship, Max took a group picture at the glacier.

After the glacier, we made a wet landing and took a walk around the tundra. It was a bit tricky as the ground was squishy and uneven, but it was beautiful. Mosquitos and flies were thrilled by the feast our visit presented, so we wore mosquito netting over our faces.
